The skin, it’s more than just your birthday suit

Along with having its own immune system, the skin is the one of the bodies largest organs making up around 15% of your total body weight.

What is CBD?

CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids extracted from the main strain of the hemp plant, with history of medicinal uses dating back thousands of years. While both THC and CBD have numerous therapeutic attributes, CBD does not give off the “high” effect like THC would.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

Founded in the 1990’s by Dr. Lisa Matusda, the discovery of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) started to grab attention of doctors and scientist when they strived to understand how THC, the substance that gets you high, affects the human body. It is understood today that the endocannabinoid system is made of three key parts: cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids, and metabolic enzymes. The main purpose of the (ECS) is to maintain homeostasis in the human body.

Endocannabinoids receptors are founds all throughout the human body on the surface of our cells. When stimulated by cannabinoids, these receptors experience several different reactions. To this day, two cannabinoid receptors have been identified by medical researchers, CB1 and CB2. CB1 is found mostly in our central and peripheral nervous systems. CB2 receptors are found primarily in our gastrointestinal system where they help balance the immune system and inflammatory response in the bowls. CB2 receptors play a huge role in regulating many parts of the human body such as: Inflammation, appetite, mood, cardiovascular activity, memory, sleep patterns, and pain.

CB1 & CB2

Both CB1 & CB2 receptors are found in all cell types of the skin.

The skin is constantly producing endocannabinoid molecules known as anandamide and 2-AG. Endocannabinoids are released in certain amounts which is contingent upon the “healthy state” of the organ. The skins “cannabinoid tone” is constantly effecting all sections of the skin as endocannabinoids act on different cell types and contribute to their healthy function.

The ECS & the epidermis

When cannabinoid receptors are activated by endocannabinoids on epidermal cells, they regulate the skins normal function as a barrier. When CB1 & CB2 receptors are activated, the function of epidermal cells are modified either through proliferation, differentiation or apoptosis. Endocannabinoids also suppress inflammation in the epidermis which help conditions like dry skin, eczema, and acne.

The ECS and skin disease

The main purpose of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis in the human body. When an endocannabinoid dysregulation or deficiency takes place, studies show this can contribute to a wide array of human diseases. The same can be said for the skin. An unhealthy balance of the skins endocannabinoid tone can likely lead to skin conditions such as acne, inflammation, and eczema.
